After deciding you want your home to use gas, the next thing you have to do is figure out how you want to install your gas tank. There are a few key factors to consider, which is why we’re going to review whether above-ground or underground propane tanks are the best for you.
How They’re Installed
Before installing either type of tank, you need to ensure that you get the proper permits for doing so. Then you’ll need to find a place far enough away from your home for safety precautions. Once that’s done, it’s time for you to prep the grounds.
If you’re getting an above-ground tank, you’ll probably want to install a concrete slab for easy installation, although it’s not necessary. If you decide to get an underground take, you’ll need to clear the land for where the professionals are going to dig the hole. Once they do so, they’ll move the tank into it and fill the hole back up.
How Much They Cost
Now it’s on to the main factor that’ll determine whether you think above-ground or underground propane tanks are the best: the price. It’ll be the same regardless of where you install the tank. However, other parts of the installation process will cost you as well.
Above-ground tank installation doesn’t cost as much. You’ll simply pay for a small amount of labor and the concrete slab (if you decide you want one.) Underground tank installation will cost a bit more. The entire process can take two to three hours which will significantly increase the labor costs. You’ll also need to pay for sacrificial anodes, which are extra metal pieces that’ll keep the tank from rusting, so the overall cost will be higher.
How Safe They Are
There are a couple of factors that influence how safe your propane tank will be. In general, an underground one will be safer (especially during the winter.) The only thing that could possibly damage the tank is rising water, which would move it around in its hole.
Above-ground tanks are vulnerable to all kinds of weather except flooding, especially if it’s bolted down to the concrete. This kind of tank can also be damaged by people through acts of vandalism or reckless driving. Neither option is entirely safe.
Which Should You Choose?
